 Try these diodes: (there are others too just search around)

 Do not have a resistor across the cap filling up!!
 This will also work to load the whole thing down at the input very bad
 besides making it so cap will just not fill or capture the flyback energy as it should.
 Discharge cap into a coil of very high impedance maybe good idea for your experiments...
 With FWBR, there will b e only one diode of the bunch of four that takes the brunt of it all...really you only need one steering diode per switch, but I think ringing is going on and you catch al little more with FWBRs...also if you have rotor of magnets sweeping past coils, there will be more than just the flyback to catch with FWBR configuration...
