The S-band was developed for broadband communication to the Apollo space ship.

The brother of a friend of mine was the first Danish radio amateur to communicate with somebody in Australia by making a helical antenna and using the Moon as reflector. I don't know the power of the transmitter or if it was one or two way communication or what frequency was used. This must have been twice the distance of the communication between the Earth and the Moon.
