"...perfect match of condenser and coil impedance to get the Xl/XC cancellation..."
This happens at the resonant frequency where the inductive reactance equals the capacitive reactance. As they are of different sign they cancels out during the resonant frequency. Any resistive part can't be canceled and thus limits the quality-factor (Q-factor). For highest peak voltage keep the capacitance as small as possible. Already Tesla pointed out this.

As Hector has said many times, you have to have a :perfect match of condenser and coil impedance to get the Xl/XC cancellation @ peak ultra high "Q' of the resonance curve. Fortunately! for magnetos you are working at "very low audio" frequencies since your are dealing with only up to 12,000 RPM which translates to 200 cps (cycles per second). No 'fancy high freq to deal with!

 Hector,
As for the experiment, tried with a 4007 then a fast HD diode and three different coils in series with the xenon. One pancake from a inductive cooker, one I wound on a small piece of mumetal from an audio transformer isolation shield and one a switching power supply transformer.

Did not notice a difference in or out except with one series coil connected there was a slight change in tone from the strobe at a certain speed with the diode connected vs not.
Got headache from strobe and stopped.

Ok a series of experiment to do .....

flash unit with a coil , remove reverse diode flash , put reverse diode flash

predicted result diode in will flash more faster more intense .

diode out will flash slower a bit less intense .......

that means you have recovered collapse energy spike and return it to the
 capacitor .....

on Normans commentary i highlighted he states clearly capacitor must match specific coil requirements to deliver the right joule volt ampere to excite whatever OU coil you might want to use and recover its potential within the return spike as i have mention to go on an easy trail a circuit to excite and a circuit to harvest following the proper logarithmic path of excitation and gain curve ... yes i know its dealing with advanced solid state stuff but i have no choice if you have to understand rotary dynamics of RV
and other similar devices that PLAY on the same rules!

in other words this is totally applicable to pulsemotors and making any brushed generator work as an EV Gray motor without having to suffer the
Jinx curse EV gray devices ended with .

 pause ....

 awaiting feedback ..
