The principle is that the magnet induces a current in the primary coil that is shorted for giving max current. At some point in time the short is removed by opening the 'Contact breaker.' This makes an inductive kick back or flyback voltage in both the primary and secondary coils. When opening the contact breaker the only limit to the induced voltage is the capacitance of the windings in parallel with the external capacitor and of course the breakdown voltage of the insulation or air or spark plugs. The inductance of the primary in parallel with the capacitance of the capacitor gives how fast the energy is released. Without the capacitor the energy will be released mush faster (higher power in less time and also higher voltage but same current) which may make the contact breaker opening too slow and cause the high tension to arc across the contact breaker thus releasing the power here to corrode the contact points. Thus the main purpose for the capacitor is to prevent the inductive kickback (or flyback in electronics terminology) to harm the contact breaker or the insulation of the wires.

I worked for 7 years in Marine repair shop and found that the Outboard Marine (Evinrude) back in the early days (before the new single pole CD solid state commuted mags) had a three pole stator design with the flywheel mounted N-S pole moving magnets. "Perfect design which provoked the "Neutral Spike" from the iron core! I could turn a mag by hand (very low speed) and get a 1/2 inch bright blue spark. Most folks did not exactly understand the inductor/capacitor relationship.
By "design" the capacitor value was very precise because it perfectly matched the impedance of the inductor iron core coil so that final result was a total cancellation of X-L/ X-C which precisely was at the "peak" of the Universal Resonance Curve. (Lossless region), Ultra high "Q".
Hector told you guys about striving to achieve this Ultra high "Q" when dealing with a resonant tuned circuit. The old outboard mags did precisely this! I head so many technicians tell me that the "Condenser" (capacitor) was there to prevent arcing at the breaker points! "True" for battery driven ignition circuits but totally wrong for magnetos.
The "condenser" in the old magnetos discharged back through the inductor coil just as the flux reversal was occurring and due to the fact that the Lenz effect does not exist during magnetic field collapse, there is a series assist and acceleration of the flux decay. "Scope shows" a straight down line which is Tesla's "Compression of energy in time"! It would be very difficult to calculate the "multiplication factor"! In ferro-resonance phenomenon, a 10X current and voltage has been documented. "But"! was there a "perfect match" of X/C" at the random resonance event! I dare say "not". If you design your device following the old time Outboard Marine Magneto theory then you will get "off the chart" power multiplication in the earth Neutral spike, just as Tesla pointed out!
I agree with the use of a "plasma" tube "quenched by magnet" to do your commutation of circuit! This would comply with Tesla's original theory from "Gee"! 1899. Who would have thought that we re-visit the "Master"! Hope this will help explain Ideal "Neutral Spike" development! All of this is "Magneto-electric" and "NOT" "Electro-magnetic". Please think in the "inverse"! "High power" manifest in very small conductors with no heating and all the other weird off shoot phenomenon! "have seen them all" and posted here to be "shot down" by "conventional experimenters" who write it off as fully explained by conventional electrical theory! "NOT"! Believe me!

Pg 25 the Tesla receiver where some tiny microamp air battery is
creating enough energy for an electromagnet to snuff a plasma tube.
This is much higher than the x10 energy increase so the negatricity
spike is likely acting as a positron radar pulse pinging back a shitload
of electrons from the earth cavity resonator.
That old magneto is very complex. Is there a single polepiece coil in
those or a horseshoe core coil like most modern magnetos?
Can you elucidate the build of a proper magneto for this effect?
