the reason of using SCRs is , first is cheap as dirt , available at surplus items  everywhere

it is intended for a rectified sinewave cycle discharging a capacitor & self turning off  unless you use a trigistor that can be turned off with a reverse pulse to its gate   ..

can be turned on with a resistor  ,,, turns off as it discharges its capacitor

source ... things to look at, reactance , snubbing, reverse diode protection & CEMP recovery   buck converters, SCRs dimmers & the such .

party xenon strobe-lights, thyratron theory, coil bangers ...
