 What actually a  GRAY motor is, is whatever it is eh....
 

 Why not have it in both attraction and repulsion mode?
 

 Because:
 If you want "konemotor" design you need always repulsive pulses N-N or S-S since there are the "regauging" permanent magnets in design, located and mounted next to stator coils, but "reacting" to the rotor CORES,. flipping the polarity of the cores (still remaining in their previously pulsed polarity)  so upon APPROACH for next firing position there will be a free power-stroke of S-rotor  to  N-stator, not N-rotor N-stator which would create a magnetic clash upon approach, and only momentum of rotor could push through it (so better a free power pull)
