When the magnetic circuit is opened the steel blocks will demagnetize. The coercive force of steel (the magnetomotive force loaded into the circuit) is too small to keep the magnetic flux against any high reluctance (magnetic resistance). Even a slight air gap may have too high reluctance to let the magnetic flux ('magnetic current') pass and thus disrupts the flux.

The experiment can be done with an E-I laminated transformer core given a DC pulse through a winding. A ferrite core has too big distributed air gap (higher reluctance) to keep the magnetism staying in the circuit.

 Since the magnetism is a closed loop there's likely no stray fields outside the blocks.
 

 It would be interesting to cover just half of one face one block with a very thin layer of Glad Wrap.
 To see if adhesion can be maintained through the thinnest of electrical insulators?
